Phonics Resources

Phonics involves the relationship between sounds and their spellings. Once children grasp the alphabetic principle and learn the most common sound-spellings, their next hurdle involves decoding multi-syllabic words. Some children have difficulty decoding these multi-syllabic words. Learning certain reading strategies can help. Phonics instruction helps the reader to decode words and develop word recognition skills.
Reading Strategies
  • Get your mouth ready for the sound.
  • Look at the pictures.
  • Chunk the word.
  • Skip the word and read on, then reread.
  • Think about the story.
  • Reread the sentence.
