Comprehension Resources
Comprehension
Comprehension involves constructing meaning that is reasonable and accurate by connecting what has been read to what the reader already knows and thinking about all of this information until it is understood. Comprehension is the final goal of reading instruction.
Strategies
Before Reading: Students preview the text by doing a "picture walk" through the selection. Prior knowledge is activated by making connections to the selection. Students make a prediction about what the text will be about. Predictions will be confirmed at the end of the selection.
During Reading: Students clarify unknown words and ask questions about the text.
After Reading: Students summarize the text, find the main idea, compare and contrast ideas, or draw conclusions from the text. Students also use the text as a reference to find answers to questions.
